Alice "Mcmahan" Kay

March 3, 1922 — May 12, 2018

Alice McMahan Kay, 96, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Saturday, May 12, 2018 with her daughters by her side.  She was born in Abbeville on March 3, 1922 to the late John L. and Cornelia Simpson McMahan.

Alice graduated from Lowndesville High School and attended Erskine College. She was a dedicated member of Midway Baptist Church. Alice spent her life raising her two daughters and maintaining a healthy, happy, beautiful home. She loved bragging about her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  Alice cherished memories of time spent with her best friend of 30 years, Mary Saylors, and dancing at local community centers. It has been said she made her dance partners feel like they could really dance. She also loved yellow finch, hummingbirds, flowers, grapefruit, ice cream, making and sharing her famous peach cobblers and getting dressed “to the nines.”

Alice was the last surviving member of her immediate family, having been preceded in death by her parents and siblings: John M. McMahan (“Bubba”), Hazel Temple, Howard McMahan, Grace Knight McNeil and Cleveland McMahan (“Cotton”).

She is survived by her loving daughters, Merle Copeland (husband, Buddy) and Barbara Kay; grandchildren, Melissa Ciocian (husband, Chris) and Lee Tourgee; and great-grandchildren Cullen and Maya – all of whom will miss her very much. Survivors also include many nieces and nephews and special friends.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held 11:00AM, Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Midway Baptist Church. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall.

Merle and Barbara especially thank Alice’s niece/”other daughter,” Connie Temple Normand, for her ongoing devotion and concern, as well as Dr. Chris Oxendine, Dr. Keith Scott, Dr. Blake Hodges and the Abbeville Area Medical Center staff for the tender, loving care given during their mother’s last days.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in memory of “Miss Alice,” may be sent to Midway Baptist Church, 1218 Highway 284, Abbeville, SC 29620.
