Auby Gene Hilley, 88, of Calhoun Falls died Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at Self Regional Medical Center. He was born in Calhoun Falls to the late Nathan Michael Hilley and Grace Varner Hilley.
‘Hilley,’ as he was affectionately known, attended Calhoun Falls schools. He honorably served his country with the United States Army as a member of the 185th Regiment in the Korean War where he was awarded the Korean Service Medal with 4 Bronze Service Stars; Hilley was also deployed during the Vietnam War. He was employed in the concrete, iron and steel industries before he began truck driving. Hilley owned and operated Midway Store in Batesburg for many years where he specialized as a gunsmith, as well. Fishing, hunting and cheering on his Atlanta Braves were a few of his favorite pastimes. Papa Hilley will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Cleo, Thomas, Rob, Roy, Weaver, David and James Hilley, Berda Mae Wheless and Mary Emma Fowler.
Hilley is survived by his children, Auby Mike Hilley of Winston Salem, NC, Patrick Hilley of Key Largo, FL, Roy Steven Hilley (Deborah) of Winston Salem, Robin Hilley of Calhoun Falls, Sara Hilley (Lynn) of Leesville, SC, Jessica Baker (Jason) of Wagener, SC and Travis Hilley of Warrenton, VA; his dear sister, Jewell Scott, of Calhoun Falls; seventeen grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; and a wide circle of extended family and friends.
The family will receive friends 12:00Noon – 1:00PM, Monday, October 7, 2019 at Harris Funeral Home, Calhoun Falls Chapel. Funeral services will begin at 1:30PM in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Scotty Willoughby officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in Latimer Cemetery.
