Betty Lou Threlkeld Brickle, 84, of Lowndesville, wife of the late William H. Brickle, died Saturday, August 13, 2022 at the Abbeville Area Medical Center. She was born in Iva on August 24, 1937 to O.Y. and Bonnie Moore Threlkeld.
Affectionately known as ‘Nanny’, Betty Lou was a graduate of Calhoun Falls High School. She also graduated from Anderson College, Erskine College and Clemson University where she received her Master’s degree in Education. A teacher at Iva Elementary, Betty Lou retired after 30 years of dedicated service. Her passion was teaching reading and many of her former students still fondly give credit to her for inspiring their love of reading.
Betty Lou had many hobbies. She enjoyed cooking, sewing and caring for her family. Lunch get-togethers with her high school graduation class, other retired teachers and the Red Hatter’s brought her much happiness.
A life-long member of Union Baptist Church, she taught Sunday School, served on multiple committees and as church clerk, worked in VBS and started the Children’s Church Ministry. A devout Christian, she loved her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ and was a light unto this world and her family, giving guidance and encouragement.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Harold P. Threlkeld and her best friend of 80 years, Esta Bruton.
Betty Lou and her late husband of 65 years, William, had a wonderful marriage and from it created beautiful family. She is survived by two children, Billy Brickle (Carol) of Iva and Sharon Brickle of Lowndesville; two brothers, Herbert Threkeld (Betty) of Ninety-Six and Young Threlkeld (Carla) of Simpsonville; sister-in-law, Barbara Threlkeld of Anderson; five grandchildren, Curt Brickle (Jennifer), Cyndi McGee (Reid), Paige Bowser (Ben), Caroline Morgan (Harrison) and Preston Carwile; and seven great-grandchildren, Gracie, Jessie, Emmylou, Billie Ann, Wesley, Spencer and Tripp. Her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were her entire world.
The celebration of Betty Lou’s life will be 4:00PM, Tuesday, August 16, 2022 at Union Baptist Church in Iva. Burial will follow in Smyrna Cemetery. The family will receive friends following the graveside.
