Charles 'Charlie' Rufus Brown

Charles ‘Charlie’ Rufus Brown, 87, of Abbeville, husband of Marie Williams Brown, died Tuesday, June 25, 2024, at the Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home. He was born in Ware Shoals to the late Iler Alexander and Helen Josephine Davis Brown.

Charlie graduated from Greenwood High School, Class of 1956. He worked tirelessly for 40 years at Winn Dixie in Greenwood, Abbeville and briefly in Anderson, leaving a lasting impact through his dedication and hard work. A proud US Navy Veteran, Charlie later retired from the S.C. National Guard as part of the 263rd Army Air and Missile Defense in Anderson, SC. He was a member of Abbeville First Baptist Church, the Shirley Seawright Bible Study Class and the Tweenagers Senior Group. Charlie will be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Bobby Joe Brown, Gordon Brown and William D. Brown; and a sister, Hazel McKee.

Charlie is survived by his wife of 61 years, Marie, of the home; two sons, Joe Robert Brown (Roxane) of Lexington, KY and Dr. Carl Alexander Brown (Susan) of Boise, Idaho; daughter, Kathryn Brown McDowell (Adam) of Abbeville, SC; six grandchildren, Noah, Haylee, Matthew, Emily, Abram and Abigail; and a great-grandson, Ashton.

The family will receive friends 10:00AM – 11:00AM, Saturday, June 29, 2024, at Harris Funeral Home, Abbeville Chapel. Funeral services, with military honors, will begin at 11:00AM in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Ray Brown and Rev. Chris Sullivan officiating.
