Charles S. "Speedy" Sumner

January 8, 1939 — February 23, 2015

Charles S. 'Speedy' Sumner, 76, of Abbeville, husband of Barbara 'Toots' Bailey Sumner, died Monday, February 23, 2015 at The Renaissance Assisted Living in Due West, SC. He was born in Union, SC to the late Toy and Elsie Boling Sumner. He was a 1961 graduate of Clemson University and a proud Clemson Alumni supporter. Mr. Sumner worked for many years in textile and manufacturing industries having worked at the Abbeville-Milliken Plant and Flexible Technologies, he also worked at the McCormick Correctional Institution. Mr. Sumner was a member of South Side Baptist Church. He was an avid farmer and loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Mr. Sumner was a member of the Abbeville County Farm Bureau, the Cattleman Association and the Forest Land Owners Association. Surviving Mr. Sumner are his wife of 58 years of Abbeville; a daughter, Allyson Smith and her husband Greg of Due West, SC; three sons, Mark Sumner and his wife Donna of Abbeville, David Sumner and his wife Angela of Lumberton, NC and Jonathan Sumner and his wife Tina of Abbeville; a brother, Donald Sumner of Charleston, SC; two sisters, Frances Martin of Union, SC and Joyce McDonald of Winnsboro, SC; eight grandchildren, Hailey, Joshua, Megan, Brittany, Katy Nell, Bailey Sumner, Greyson and Carson Smith. The family will receive friends from 6:00PM to 8:00PM Tuesday, February 24, 2015 at Harris Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2:00PM Wednesday, February 25, 2015 in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Jason Wilson, Rev. Jonathan Shelor and Rev. Earl Hartley officiating. Burial will follow in Long Cane Cemetery. The family is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jonathan Sumner, 469 Stevenson Road, Abbeville. The family expresses their sincere appreciation for the love and care shown to their family by Mr. Allen Hughes and staff of the Abbeville Nursing Home and Mr. Seth Sherard and the staff of The Renaissance Independent and Assisted Living Community.
