C.V. Buddy Ashley Jr.

January 18, 1925 — August 11, 2009

C.V. "Buddy" Ashley, Jr., 84, of Abbeville, husband of Evelyn Page Ashley, died Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at the Abbeville Area Medical Center. He was born in Abbeville to the late Anna Wheeler Ashley & Calvin Vance Ashley, Sr. Mr. Ashley served as a Sergeant in WWII as a tail gunner aboard a B-17 bomber. He retired, after many dedicated years of service, from CSX Railroad where he was a conductor. Mr. Ashley loved to fly planes, farm, art work and attend his church. For over 72 years, he was a dedicated member of Lebanon Presbyterian Church where he served as a past Deacon, Elder, and beloved Sunday School Teacher. He also enjoyed attending South Side Baptist Church with his wife where they were both active participates in the senior group "The Sun Lighters". Mr. Ashley was a member of various organizations such as Past Chairman of the Abbeville County School Board, Past Commander of the American Legion Post #2, member of the VFW Post #6087, a founding member of the Mt. Carmel Yacht Club, a member of the Clinton Masonic Lodge #3 and the Hejaz Shrine Temple. He adored his family and friends and enjoyed helping his community whenever and wherever he could. He is survived by his wife of the home; a daughter, Peggy Ashley Payne of Abbeville; a son, Van Ashley and his wife Amanda of Abbeville; two step-daughters, Gwen Cartledge and her husband Tommy of Mountville and Betty Floyd and her husband Carl of Newton, NC; two sisters, Sara Clemmons of Florence and Dorothy Waters of Spartanburg; thirteen grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6:00PM to 8:00PM Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at Harris Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11:00AM Thursday, August 13, 2009 at the Lebanon Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Arnold Johnson and the Rev. Earl Hartley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with military honors. The family is at his residence. Memorial contributions, in memory of Mr. Ashley, may be sent to the Lebanon Presbyterian Church, 698 Mt. Carmel Rd., Abbeville, SC 29620 or to Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 W.
