D. Reid Ellis

 

David Reid Ellis, 74, of West Columbia, S C, died on June 8, 2024, at the Still Hopes retirement community following an extended illness.

 

A native of Due West, SC, he was born on March 8, 1950, to parents Roddey Stevenson Ellis, Jr, and Mary Frances Reid Ellis. He was a graduate of the University of South Carolina with a bachelor's degree in journalism and Juris Doctorate from the USC School of Law.  He enjoyed a 37-year career with the Veterans Affairs Regional Office in Columbia, SC, retiring as Deputy General Counsel.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a nephew, Bowen Ellis.

Reid is survived by his brothers, Roddey Ellis III (Jane) of Greenville, SC and  Betts Ellis (Traci) of Mount Pleasant, SC; his father’s second wife, Armena Ellis of Due West, SC; nephews Steven Ellis (Molly) of Johns Island, SC and Sloan Ellis (Brittany) of Greenville, SC; nieces Carter Reid Ellis Hebel (Ben) of Charleston, SC and Grayson Ellis of Mount Pleasant, SC; and numerous cousins.

 

Reid was an avid South Carolina Gamecocks fan. He enjoyed socializing with friends, spectator sports, hiking, tennis, travel abroad and bridge. As a young man he was an accomplished pianist. Reid was characterized by his methodical planning of his personal activities, quick wit and friendly banter with friends.

 

The family is deeply grateful to Kellum and Jane Allen of West Columbia for their dedicated friendship and tireless care and support of Reid.

 

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, June 11, 2024, in the Due West ARP Church fellowship hall at 1:00 PM followed by 2:00 PM graveside service in the church cemetery.

 

Memorial contributions, in Reid’s memory may be made to the Coastal Conservation League, 131 Spring St. Charleston, SC 29403, the University of South Carolina Office of Gift Processing, 1600 Hampton Street, Suite 736, Columbia, SC 29208 or the charity of one’s choice.
