Doris Jackson Land, wife of J. Stuart Land and daughter of the late Lucia Woodhurst and Andrew Hagen Jackson, died Monday, January 18, 2016, at the Abbeville Area Medical Center. She was born in Abbeville, February 7, 1919. Mrs. Land graduated from Abbeville High School in 1936 and received a BS degree in Home Economics from Lander College in 1940. She taught in the public schools of Orangeburg and Colleton Counties. Mrs. Land returned to Abbeville in 1944 to open "The Ladies Shoppe" with her mother. Her sister, Eleanor, joined them in 1948 and the sisters continued the business until 1986. She was a life-long member of the Abbeville Presbyterian Church, serving as Sunday School teacher, Senior Youth Advisor, Circle Leader, and Moderator of the Women of the Church. Mrs. Land was the first woman elected to the session, and served as Clerk of the Session. Active in civic and social activities of Abbeville, she was a member of the Pilot Club, The Green Thumb and Daffodil Garden Clubs, The Entre' Nous Book Club, and a founding member of the Abbeville County Historical Society and the Abbeville Cotillion Club. Mrs. Land was a member of the organizing Board of Directors of the Heritage House and served on the Board of Visitors of Piedmont Technical College. Surviving, in addition to her husband, J. Stuart Land, are her sister Eleanor Carmichael; nephew, Duncan Carmichael (wife, Melanie); nieces Meredith C. Trask and Lucia Bishop (husband, Thurmond); great-nephews, John Andrew Bishop, Stuart Land Trask, William Bishop, and Webster Trask; great-nieces, Mary Hagen Carmichael, Anna Frances Bishop Bond (husband, Matthew), Caroline Bishop and Katherine Carmichael. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her great-nephew, Leith Paul Trask III. A Service to Celebrate Mrs. Land's Life will be held 2:00pm, Saturday, January 23, 2016 in the Abbeville Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Dr. Greg Henley officiating. A private burial will be in Long Cane Cemetery.
