Doris Barnes Powell, 96, wife of the late William D. ‘Geechie’ Powell, of Lowndesville, died Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at the Abbeville Area Medical Center. She was born in Abbeville to the late Ernest C. and Maggie Lee Wright Barnes.
Mrs. Powell retired from Milliken & Co – Abbeville Plant. Later, she was employed by the United States Government as the Postmaster of Lowndesville and again retired from that position. Mrs. Powell was a member of Smyrna United Methodist Church.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three sisters, Willie Barnes, Ellen Odell Barnes and Annie Benton and a great-grandson, Aaron Michael Powell.
Mrs. Powell is survived by her son, Robert C. “Tater” Powell, of Iva; two grandsons, Mike Powell (Bridget) and Kenny Powell; four great-grandchildren, Drew Powell, Jacob Powell (Paige), Alex Powell, and Heidi McCall (Lee); and a great-great-grandson, Gunner.
The family will receive friends 1:00PM – 2:00PM, Friday, November 9, 2018 at Harris Funeral Home, Abbeville Chapel. Funeral services will begin at 2:00PM in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Scotty Willoughby officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
