Dr. Jim A. Knight, of Due West passed away December 23, 2021, at NHC Healthcare in Clinton, SC. He was born on January 27, 1943, in Newport News, VA to the late Roy Aldon Knight and Jeanette Jones Knight and raised in Ware Shoals, SC.
He was a 1961 graduate of Ware Shoals High School, a 1965 graduate of Erskine College, and completed his PhD in chemistry from the University of North Carolina. He joined the Erskine College chemistry faculty in 1969 and served Erskine as Vice President and Dean from 1976 until 1988. He was elected chancellor of Clinch Valley College in Wise, VA (now the University of Virginia’s College at Wise) in 1988 where he served until 1992, and then spent 16 years in administrative positions with the University of Virginia.
At Erskine, Jim was an ardent supporter of the faculty, staff and students there. His tenure as dean was marked by the recruiting and support of an extraordinary faculty, and his work with student admissions led to the recruiting of numerous classes of gifted and diverse students. At Clinch Valley, Jim brought his experience in fundraising into his role as chancellor, leading the college to significant new heights in financial success, and overseeing the institution of the football program there. Like at Erskine, he was also proudest of the faculty, staff and students at Clinch Valley and UVA that he worked with each day.
Jim is survived by his wife of 55 years, Jeannie Dove Knight; three children, David Aldon Knight (Anna) of Spartanburg, Kevin Hunter Knight (Debbie) of Mt.
