Edith Mitchell Brawley, 87, of Due West, SC, wife of the late Dr. John G. Brawley, Jr., died Sunday, February 4, 2024, at The Oaks in Brevard, NC. She was born in Charleston, SC to the late Francis Marion Mitchell, Jr. and Elizabeth Hay Mitchell.
A graduate of Johns Island High School and Erskine College, Mrs. Brawley was a pillar of the Erskine College community through her roles at the Erskine Library and Archives and the Erskine Music Department for 56 years. Her expertise helped shape the academic pursuits of countless students, faculty and researchers over the years.
Mrs. Brawley possessed an extraordinary ability to make everyone feel welcome with her kind spirit and warm smile. This remarkable personality trait allowed her to not only excel professionally but also create lasting bonds with those she encountered throughout her life.
For 21 years, Mrs. Brawley served on the AAMC Foundation board, contributing to its growth and success. She was a member of the Due West ARP church, Circle # 2 and active in the local AAUW. Mrs. Brawley, a woman of grace and distinction, will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her.
“Ea” as she was affectionally known to her beloved grandchildren, loved horses and was instrumental in founding the Erskine College Equestrian team. Besides grands and horses, her favorite things in life were books, birds, chai tea, ice cream and pink! She loved her childhood home of Wadmalaw and talked often about harvesting oysters.
She is survived by her son, John Gray Brawley, III (Colleen) of Davis, CA; daughter, Harriet Morton (Kevin) of Brevard, NC; two brothers, Marion Mitchell (Stokie) of Wadmalaw Island, SC and Lewis Mitchell (Marilyn) of Wilmington, DE; sister, Elizabeth Neil of Atlanta, GA; and five grandchildren, Amarinthia Morton, Nellie Morton, Sean Brawley, Owen Brawley and Emma Brawley.
Funeral services will be 2:00PM, Friday, February 9, 2024, in the Due West ARP church with Rev. Calvin Draffin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
