Eugenia Gurney Carter

May 28, 1926 — January 6, 2008

Eugenia Gurney Carter, age 81, passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2008 at the La Plata Nursing Home in La Plata, Missouri, where she had resided for four years. She is survived by her husband Dr. K. Nolon Carter.

A 1947 graduate of Erskine College in Due West, South Carolina, Mrs. Carter came from a family deeply rooted in the Associate Reformed Presbyterian church denomination and Erskine College. As a chemistry major, she participated in many college activities including editing the Arrow her senior year, and was the recipient of the Nabors Scholarship Medal during each of her four years at Erskine. This award was given to the student with the highest grades in the college. Following her graduation from Erskine, she received her Master of Science degree from Vanderbilt University.

Mrs. Carter dedicated her professional career to furthering the education of others. She taught chemistry and other physical sciences at Hiwassee College, Columbia College, Clinton High School and Presbyterian College. Clinton High School recognized her by naming their chapter of the National Honor Society in her honor. From 1958-1987, Mrs. Carter taught at Presbyterian College (PC) in the science departments. During her time of service at PC she received the Distinguished Service Award from the Board of Visitors. In November 2007, Mrs. Carter was honored by induction into the Erskine College Academic Hall of Fame.

She and her husband spent most of their married life as residents of Clinton, South Carolina where she served actively in many aspects of community life. In her dedication to the Lord, she was active in her church, Providence Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, as a member of the Women's Ministries, Sunday School teacher and organist for more than 26 years. In addition, she participated at the presbytery and synod levels of the denomination. For many years, Mrs. Carter was a contributing writer for the Clinton Chronicle with her science column "Window on the World". She was a member of the Erskine College Board of Trustees for two terms, including one as secretary of the Board.

Mrs. Carter was an avid reader and bicyclist, and she enjoyed knitting and sewing. She was a vigorous tennis player who delighted in a good exchange, regardless of who finally gained the point.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by their son Dr. Kenneth N. Carter, Jr. and his wife Lynn and their two children, Nolon Donald and Rosemarie Eugenia, and by her sister Jane Gurney Teasley.

Committal Services will be held on Friday, January 11, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. at the cemetery at the Due West ARP Church with Dr. Jack Heinsohn and Dr. Roy Beckham officiating, and a memorial service will be held on Friday at 4:00 p.m. at Providence ARP Church in Clinton, SC with Dr. Jack Heinsohn officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to either the Eugenia Gurney Carter Scholarship Fund at Erskine College, PO Box 338, Due West, SC 29639 or to the Nolon and Eugenia Carter Endowment at Presbyterian College, 503 South Broad Street, Clinton, SC 29325.
