Frances Ione (Onie) Rogers Bradley died Sunday, March 29, 2009 at Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood. She was born on April 11, 1913 to John Frank Rogers and Wilhelmina Hodge Rogers at the old ancestral Clinkscales-Rogers plantation known as "Home Place" in rural Abbeville County, S.C. She first attended Brownlee School on what is now Rogers Road. After completing junior high in Elberton, Ga., she returned to Abbeville and graduated from Abbeville High School in 1930. She attended Winthrop College, in Rock Hill, S.C. where she graduated in 1934 with a double major in political science and social studies and a minor in elementary education. Mrs. Bradley moved to Richmond, Va. where she next graduated from the Richmond Business College for Professional Women. She went to Norfolk, Virginia July 16, 1936 where additional graduate work was done at William and Mary College and Old Dominion College. Prior to her marriage, she enjoyed performing classical piano for public radio in Norfolk. Mrs. Bradley married the late Claude Edward Bradley, a native of Norfolk, Virginia Beach, on Dec. 14th, 1939. For a number of years after arriving in Norfolk, Mrs. Bradley worked in the Norfolk juvenile justice system and different government agencies. She then joined the Norfolk Public School System as a social worker. During her long tenure in that capacity, she was a visiting teacher to 20 of the 36 elementary schools, 5 middle schools and 2 high schools of Norfolk, Va. In December of 1976, she took early retirement to return to Rogers Crossing Farm to care for her aging father. Mrs. Bradley was active in Abbeville's Main St. United Methodist Church, the Lillian Killingsworth Sunday School Class and the Lovely Lane Church Circle. She enjoyed the church's "Goodtimers" senior group having traveled often with them and was a long term member of the Abbeville County Historical Society. Mrs. Bradley was predeceased by her husband, parents and her brother John William Rogers. She is survived by her sister-in-law, Mrs. John William Rogers of Winston Salem, N.C.; her nephew and godson, John William Rogers, II of the home; her niece Pamela Rogers (Richard) Williams of Winston-Salem, N.C.; her niece Jan Rogers (Sean) Philips of Aurora, Colorado; her great-nephew Brad Richard (Carrie) Williams; her great-nieces Meredith Williams (Ian) Phillips, Bianca Phillips, Savannah Phillips and a great-great niece Little Miss Tessa Phillips. In addition, she is survived by many dear cousins and also many special relatives from her husband's side of the family. She will be remembered for her sense of family values, strong independence, positive and cheerful spirit, as well as her helpful, caring demeanor. The family will receive friends Sunday, April 5, 2009 from 2:30PM to 3:30PM at Harris Funeral Home. A celebration of life service will be held at Main Street United Methodist Church in Abbeville on Sunday, April 5, 2009, at 4:00PM. Burial will follow in the family plot on what was originally her Hodge ancestors' land at Midway Baptist Church in rural Abbeville, S.C.
