George Malcolm Broadwell, 90, husband of Sara Clement Ward Broadwell, of Calhoun Falls, died Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at Richard Campbell Veterans Nursing Home in Anderson. He was born September 23, 1929 in Calhoun Falls to the late William and Ethel Mann Broadwell.
A graduate of Calhoun Falls High School and Erskine College, George proudly sang with the Erskine Choraleers. He honorably served in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War. During his military career, George was also involved with the Marine Choir. Employed by the Rocky River Plant (variously owned by Bigelow-Sanford, Fieldcrest, and Mohawk), he retired after 52 years.
Active in community affairs in Calhoun Falls, George was a life-long member of Calhoun Falls United Methodist Church where he enjoyed singing in the choir. Affiliated with the Calhoun Falls Lions Club for over 50 years, he coordinated the community birthday calendar. George, named Calhoun Falls Personality of the Year in 2007, served on the Calhoun Falls Town Council.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, William, Clyde and Wayne Broadwell; a sister, Edith Broadwell and a grandson, Adam Rambo.
George is survived by his wife of 61 years, Sara, of the home; his two children, George Aaron Broadwell (Peter Marino) of Gainesville, FL and Alice Broadwell Lewis (Phil) of Greenwood; a granddaughter, Sara Rambo, of Greenville; a great-granddaughter, Mary Washnis; and his sisters, Myrtle Bishop of Due West and Lena Hopkins of Rock Hill.
The family will receive friends 11:00AM – 12:00PM, Friday, November 15, 2019 in the Calhoun Falls United Methodist Church fellowship hall. Funeral services will begin at 12:00PM in the church sanctuary with Rev. Dr. Frank D. McCoy, Sr. officiating. The family invites everyone present to join them for a reception immediately following the service in the fellowship hall. Graveside services, with military honors, will begin at 2:30PM in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens.
