George Layer

April 16, 1925 — January 6, 2014

George Layer, 88, of Abbeville, husband of Ruth Stanton Layer, died suddenly on Monday, January 6, 2014 at his home. He was born in Brooklyn, NY to the late Julius and Mary Romann Layer. Mr. Layer served in the United States Marine Corps during WWII as an aviation mechanic in the South Pacific. He later retired first from the New York Telephone Company, then from AT&T Engineering. Mr. Layer was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Lakeland Marines Detachment 1112. He enjoyed playing golf and was affiliated with the Hunter's Creek "Golf Nuts" and the Stoney Point Central State Senior Tournaments. In addition to his parents, Mr. Layer was preceded in death by two brothers, Julius Layer and Donald Layer. He is survived by his wife of 60 years; his seven children, George J. Layer (Marian) of Huntington, NY, Timothy J. Layer (Natalie) of Millburn, NJ, Kathleen M. Layer Callegari of Richmond, VA, Joseph C. Layer (Sandra) of Huntington Station, NY, Paul J. Layer (Catherine) of Palm Coast, FL Christopher J. Layer (Christine) of North Massapequa, NY and Thomas J. Layer (Wendy) of Holbrook, NY; twenty-four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A Rosary Prayer will be recited on Friday, January 10, 2014 at 1:00PM at Harris Funeral Home and the family will receive friends following the prayer until 2:30PM. Relatives and Friends are invited to attend his Mass of Christian Burial at 3:00 PM Friday, January 10, 2014, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will follow in MJ "Dolly" Cooper Veterans Cemetery in Anderson with military honors. The family is at the residence. Memorial contributions, in memory of Mr. Layer, may be sent to Sacred Heart Catholic Church, P.O. Box 812, Abbeville, SC 29620.
