Dr. Hans Gerhard Engler, 84, husband of Ilse Friedrich Engler, of Due West, died peacefully Friday, November 11, 2011, at his home. He was born in Germany to the late Gustav Adolf Engler and Mathilde Jeltrup Engler. . Dr. Engler was a graduate of Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia with a Th.D. degree in Old Testament. He also graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a Masters in Music degree and a Ph.D. in Linguistics. Dr. Engler joined the Erskine College family in 1961 and was Professor Emeritus and Adjunct Faculty member in Modern Languages at Erskine having also taught Greek, Hebrew, and Old Testament. He was an active member of the Due West ARP Church where he was a Deacon, Elder, teacher of the Bonner Sunday School class, Chancel choir member for many years, director and musical accompanist of the youth choir, and played piano for the Sunday evening services. He was also a member of the Society of Biblical Literature and the American Association of Teachers of German. In 2010, Dr. Engler received an honorary induction into the Erskine College Alumni Association. He is survived by his wife of 39 years of the home; a son, Friedrich "Fred" Engler of Due West, SC; a daughter, Cornelia Engler Debuchy and her husband Jean-Michel of Lille, France; a grand-daughter, Lola Debuchy; and a sister, Christel Engler, of Berlin, Germany Funeral services will be Thursday, November 17, 2011 at 3:21PM in the Due West ARP Church with the Rev. Calvin Draffin & Dr. Randy Ruble officiating. Current Elders will serve as pallbearers and honorary pallbearers. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends following the service in the church fellowship hall. The family is at the residence.
