After a long battle with cancer, Harriett Bannister Cartledge, 85, of Abbeville, wife of Richard Cartledge, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, October 15, 2019. She was born in Abbeville County to the late James D. Bannister and Nancy Lee Campbell Bannister.
Mrs. Cartledge graduated from Greenwood Business School, received her bachelor’s degree in education from Erskine College and her master’s degree from Clemson University. She was a beloved third grade teacher at Greenville Street Elementary School for twenty years. Many happy hours were spent gardening and playing bridge with her friends. Mrs. Cartledge was a faithful member of Abbeville First Baptist Church for 75 years and an active member of the Bible Study Sunday School class.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Wayne Cartledge; three sisters and four brothers.
She was the devoted wife of 65 years to Richard Cartledge; loving mother to Cindy Murdock (Roderick) and Debbie Caricari (Tony); grandmother to Jonathan Murdock, Ashley Murdock, Austin Caricari (Diana) and Christopher Caricari; and great-grandmother to Benson Caricari. Mrs. Cartledge is also survived by her sister, Charlotte B. Smith.
The family will receive friends 2:00PM – 3:00PM, Friday, October 18, 2019 at Harris Funeral Home, Abbeville Chapel. Funeral services will begin at 3:30PM on Friday in the sanctuary of Abbeville First Baptist Church with Rev. Moses Aleman officiating. Burial will follow in Long Cane Cemetery.
