Harry G. Salley

Harry G. Salley, 95, husband of the late Helen W. Salley, died Thursday, July 1, 2010 at the Carlisle Nursing Center in Due West, SC. He was born in Perry, SC on May 17, 1915, the son of the late Rufus & Daisy Roundtree Salley. Mr. Salley served in WWII with the United States Army. He retired from Poe Corporation after many dedicated years of service. For over 60 years he and his wife lived in Columbia, SC and were active members of the Centennial A.R.P. Church and the First Presbyterian Church. He participated in many activities within both churches as well as teaching Sunday School for 30 years. Mr. Salley served as an elder and was given the honor from the First Presbyterian Church as elder emeritus. Throughout both churches Mr. Salley was better known as the "Candy Man". He was a devoted and proud supporter of the Clemson Tigers. He is survived by his daughter; Marcella Salley McDaniel of Mauldin, SC; a sister, Frances Salley Shumpert of Cheraw, S.C; two grandchildren, Gardner Patrick McDaniel of Evansville, Indiana and Gavin Young McDaniel of Cocoa Beach, FL; two great-grandsons, Nathan Young McDaniel and Avery Ernani McDaniel; and a great-granddaughter, Kaitlin Christine McDaniel. Mr. Salley will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather (or better known as "POP") and great-grandfather. A service to celebrate the life of Mr. Salley will be held Saturday, July 3, 2010 at 2:00PM in the Nelle Kennedy Moore Dining Hall at the Covenant Way Retirement Center conducted by the Rev. Calvin Draffin and the Rev. John Hopkins. The family will receive friends following the service. A private family burial will be Saturday morning in the Due West A.R.P. Church Cemetery conducted by the Rev. Roy Beckham. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Covenant Way, PO Box 307, Due West, SC 29639 or to the Due West A.R.P. Church, PO Box 397, Due West, SC 29639, or to the Bonclarken Conference Center, 500 Pine Drive, Flat Rock, NC 28731.
