Howard Culbreth

June 20, 1918 — November 21, 2012

Howard Culbreth, 94, husband of the late Virginia 'Gin' Price Culbreth, of Abbeville died Wednesday, November 21, 2012 at Emerald Gardens in Greenwood. He was born in Abbeville to the late James B. and Sarah Price Culbreth. Mr. Culbreth was a member of New Hope Presbyterian Church where he had served as a Deacon. He was a retired Army Veteran having served in WWII and receiving 6 bronze stars and 1 Silver Star. After returning home from WWII, he and his brother Earl opened Culbreth Brothers Garage where he retired in 1984 after 40 years. Mr. Culbreth was a charter member of the Edgewood Fire Department and the Abbeville VFW Post 6087. He also was a member of the American Legion Post #2, Hejaz Shriners and the Clinton Masonic Lodge #3. In addition to his wife of 68 years and his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Rayford Culbreth, and Earl S. Culbreth and a sister, Estelle Botts. Mr. Culbreth is survived by his son, Ronny Culbreth, and his wife, Dianne; a brother, Bobby Culbreth, and his wife, Barbara; two grandchildren, Cristy Evans, and her husband, Scott, and Chad Culbreth, and his wife, Patty; and four great-grandchildren, Brantley & Jeffrey Evans and Weston & Carson Culbreth, all of Abbeville. The family will receive friends from 5:00PM to 7:00 PM on Friday, November 23, 2012 at Harris Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 1:00 PM on Saturday, November 24, 2012 at New Hope Presbyterian Church with the Rev. John Fastenau officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Long Cane Cemetery. Memorial Contributions in memory of Mr. Culbreth may be sent to the New Hope Presbyterian Church Piano Fund, 136 Hwy 71, Abbeville, SC 29620 or to the Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 W.
