James S. "Jim" Jones, Jr., 68, husband of Elaine Arant Jones, died Friday, August 31, 2007 at Abbeville Area Medical Center. He was born in Branchville, SC to the late James S. and Christine Garris Jones, Sr. Mr. Jones was a devoted member of the Abbeville First Baptist Church where he served as past chairman of the deacons, he was a Sunday School teacher, served as finance director, and many other committees in the church. He was a 1961 graduate of Clemson University and a devoted member of the Alumni Association. Jim was a member of many organizations and served in many leadership roles for Abbeville County, he was very proud to be a member of the Abbeville Lions Club where he had served and held many different leadership roles from the local level as well as the state level. Jim was proud to be a part of the Gideona?(TM)s International, Abbeville Camp, where he had served as past-president, and participated on several committees. Jim Jones was a man that many would say wore many hats for Abbeville County as well as through out South Carolina. In 1988 Jim received the Distinguished Public Service Award by the Clemson University Alumni Association. He retired in 1992 after 31 years with Clemson University as the Abbeville County Extension Agent. He was Past President of the SC County Agents Association. Jim was presently the Vice a?"Chairman of the Board of Directors of Abbeville Savings & Loan, a member of the Abbeville Chamber of Commerce and was inducted into the Abbeville Hall of Fame in 2005. He was a former member of the Abbeville Historical Commission where he had served as vice-chairman. Jim Jones initiated and organized the Forestry Landowners Association and the Abbeville Cattlemana?(TM)s Association; he served on the Farm Bureau state board, state legislative committee, and past president of the county federation. He was the Abbeville County IPTAY Representative for Clemson University, served on the Board of directors of the Abbeville a?"McCormick Habitat for Humanity and without any question a huge Clemson fan. He is survived by his wife of 45 years of the home, a daughter, Susan Costner and her husband Charles of Abbeville; a son, Michael Jones of Laurens; a sister, Navie Carol Clariday and her husband Donald of Orangeburg; a brother, Robert Jones and his wife Elba of Roswell, GA; and two grandchildren that he loved and adored, Alexandra and Lindsay Costner. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to everyone. Jim was always willing to lend a hand and serve where he was needed. He will be truly missed by so many people, especially his coffee drinking buddies. The family will receive friends from 5:30PM to 7:30PM Saturday, September 1, 2007 at Harris Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be 3:00PM Sunday at the Abbeville First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Long Cane Cemetery.
