James ‘Jim’ Melvin Lewis, 77, husband of Andrea Clark Lewis, of Abbeville, SC, died Sunday, March 10, 2019 at Hospice and Palliative Care of the Piedmont in Greenwood. He was born in Brevard, NC to the late Melvin Smith and Sarah Willingham Smith.
Jim, also affectionately known as ‘Skipper’, honorably served in the United States Navy. He was a retired paramedic having served in various locations for more than 40 years. Jim was a consistent weather observer and also a hurricane hunter. Camping and golf were his hobbies; many happy hours were spent enjoying the outdoors. He was a member of the Clinton Masonic Lodge #3 AFM and Upper Long Cane Presbyterian Church where he taught Sunday School.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by a brother, Terry Lewis.
He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Andrea, of the home; sons, Scott Lewis (Jacquelynn) of North Augusta and Michael Lewis of Abbeville; a step-son, Andy Bagwell (April) of Abbeville; a daughter, Teia Lewis of Connecticut; a sister, Joanne Griffis (Leo) of Callahan, FL; his father and mother-in-law, Melvin and Sarah Clark of Abbeville; step-mother, Delores Smith of Florida and eight grandchildren, Alyssa, Eriq, Hayle, Jacquel, Dayne, Jade, Sidney and Mahala.
The family will receive friends 5:00PM – 7:00PM, Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at Harris Funeral Home, Abbeville Chapel. A service to celebrate Jim’s life will follow at 7:00PM in the funeral home chapel with the Rev. Wayne Wicker officiating where masonic rites will be rendered. Committal services with military honors will be 1:00PM, Thursday, March 14, 2019 in M.J. ‘Dolly’ Cooper Veterans Cemetery with Chaplain Larry Epps officiating.
