James Baker Speer, 88, of Abbeville, husband of the late Mary Young Speer, died Wednesday, January 28, 2015. Mr. Speer was born in Abbeville to the late Beverly and Eva Cann Speer. Mr. Speer was a WWII Veteran having served in the U.S. Navy. He worked at the Milliken-Abbeville Plant for 15 years and retired from the Monsanto Plant after 23 years of dedicated service. Mr. Speer was a member of the Cold Spring Chapel and a former member of the Rough House Coffee Club. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Ashley. Mr. Speer is survived by his daughter, Brenda Ellenburg of Abbeville; two brothers, Lewis Speer of Lowndesville, SC and Ben Speer and his wife Carol of Abbeville; two sisters, Helen Speer of Abbeville and Beverly Willis of Bentonia, MS; two grandchildren, Andy and Greg Ellenburg; three great-grandchildren, Jacob, Micah, and Jaiden; brother-in-law, Arthur Young of Abbeville; special caregiver, Wayne Phillips of Abbeville; and numerous nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 2:00PM to 3:00PM Thursday, January 29, 2015 at Harris Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin at 3:00pm on Thursday in the funeral home chapel. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. The family will be at the home on Greenville Street.
