Jean Todd Carlisle, 93, wife of Charles Henry Carlisle, died peacefully on June 1, 2018, at the Abbeville Area Medical Center. She was born in Due West to the late James Rogers and Lucille Kennedy Todd. Jean graduated from Dixie High School and Erskine College and the University of SC. Following graduation, she taught history at Winthrop University, Lander University, and Erskine College, as well as at her high school alma mater.
Jean had a deep faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and served Him as wife, mother, and leader in Women’s Ministry in the Due West Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church. From 1960 to 1972, she served as editor of the Woman’s Synodical Journal. In 1973, Jean was elected President of the Woman’s Synodical Union. She enjoyed her work with the Gideon's Auxiliary and her participation in the garden club, book club and bridge club. Jean and Charles spent many weeks each year in their home at the Bonclarken Conference Center or traveling with family and friends.
Jean is survived by Charles, her husband of 68 years; her son, Charles Todd and his wife, Margaret, of Essex Junction, VT; her daughter, Lucille Slater and her husband, the Rev. Greg Slater of Columbia SC; her daughter, Catherine Hardy and her husband, the Rev. Steve Hardy of Iva SC; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm, Monday, June 4, 2018 in the sanctuary of the Due West A.R.P. Church. The funeral service will begin at 3:00 pm on Monday with the Rev. Calvin Draffin officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
