James W. 'Jim' Powell, 74, lifelong resident of Calhoun Falls, died Friday, December 5, 2014 at Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood. He was born at home, in Calhoun Falls, to the late Howard W. and Vivian Cann Powell. Mr. Powell retired, after many years of service, as the Plant Engineer with Burlington Industries. He was a 1958 graduate of Calhoun Falls High School and an outstanding football player, having played under Coach John Fulmer. Mr. Powell was a devoted member of the Calhoun Falls Pentecostal Holiness Church where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent, taught the Joy Seekers Sunday School class and was a member of the Men's Ministry. He was a member of the Calhoun Falls Chamber of Commerce, charter member of the Calhoun Falls Jaycees, faithful member of the Calhoun Falls Blue Flashes Booster Club, member of the Gideon's International, former member and board of director with Farm Bureau, and was an avid cattle farmer. Jim had a passion for life and a love for the lost. Mr. Powell is survived by his two daughters, Tracy Cromer and her husband Darin and Paige Guthrie and her husband Rob, both of Greenwood; three sisters, Nancy Crocker and her husband William of Calhoun Falls, Barbara Brock of Marietta, GA and Frankie Taylor and her husband Buster of Calhoun Falls; three grandchildren, Kaylen Cromer, Ryder Guthrie, Reef Guthrie; the mother of Jim's children, Phyllis Powell, and countless extended family and friends. The family will receive friends from 6:00PM to 8:00PM on Sunday, December 7, 2014 at Harris Funeral Home Calhoun Falls Chapel. Funeral services will be 2:00PM Monday, December 8, 2014 in the Calhoun Falls Pentecostal Holiness Church with Rev. John Ingham and Rev. Lawrence Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. The family is at the home of Buster and Frankie Taylor.
