John Thomas 'Captain Tom' Mccomb Sr.

John Thomas McComb, Sr., 87, of McCormick, SC, died Friday, May 14, 2010 at the Abbeville Nursing Home. "Captain Tom", as he was most notably known, was born November 11, 1922 in McCormick, SC to the late James Link McComb and Clara Pettigrew McComb. He was a graduate of Clemson University majoring in Agronomy and lettered in Boxing. After graduation, "Captain Tom" married the late Vergie Lois Hartness McComb and entered the U.S. Army serving in WWII in the Philippines. After serving his country, he helped start the McCormick County division of the SC National Guard. He retired from the National Guard with 25 years of dedicated service. "Captain Tom" also retired from the USDA Farm Service Agency where he was a charter member of the employee association SCASCOE. He was a former member of the McCormick County School Board, where he served for many years, and was the District Commissioner for the McCormick Soil and Water Conservation District. "Captain Tom" was an active member of the McCormick County Cattleman's Association, McCormick County Forestry Association, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Association. He was an avid farmer and loved working and raising cattle on his pre-Revolutionary War family farm until moving to the Abbeville Nursing Home. "Captain Tom" was loved by all that knew him and will be missed by his many friends, especially those at the Abbeville Nursing Home. Surviving "Captain Tom" is his son, John T. McComb, Jr. and his wife Patty of Anderson; two daughters, Linda Floyd and her husband Mike of West Columbia and Jean Russell and her husband Harry of Dalton, GA; a sister, Lois Evatt of Central, SC; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. The family will receive friends from 2:00PM to 3:00PM on Sunday, May 16, 2010 at Harris Funeral Home. Funeral services, conducted by the Rev. Lee Kennerly, will begin in the funeral home chapel at 3:30PM on Sunday. Burial with full military honors will follow in Bethia Cemetery. Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made to a charity of one's choice in memory of "Captain Tom" McComb.
