John M. McMahan, 97, of Abbeville, husband of the late Margaret Strickland McMahan, died Thursday, October 25, 2012 at his residence. He was born in Elberton, GA to the late John L. and Cornelia Bell Simpson McMahan. Mr. McMahan retired from Davis & Floyd as a surveyor and inspector. He was a retired veteran of the U.S. Army having served in WWII and was held as a POW. Mr. McMahan was a writer, a mason, and a member of the Clinton Masonic Lodge #3, the American Legion Post #2, VFW Post #3 and the Disabled American Veterans Association. He was a member of Midway Baptist Church and former member of Abbeville First Baptist Church. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Howard McMahan and two sisters, Hazel Temple and Grace Knight. Surviving Mr. McMahan is a daughter, Brenda Grace M. Bragg and her husband Donald of Abbeville; a son, John L. McMahan, II and his wife Brenda of Greenwood; four grandchildren, Angela Lar McMahan, Margaret Ashley Strange (Josh), Shawn Bragg (Betsy) and Monique Steimki (Scott); a brother, Cleveland McMahan and his wife Gerry of Harlem, GA; a sister, Alice Kay of Abbeville; five great-grandchildren and a host of extended family and many friends. The family will receive friends from 6:00PM to 8:00PM on Saturday, October 27, 2012 at Harris Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2:30PM Sunday, October 28, 2012 at Abbeville First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. The family is at their respective homes and will greet family and friends following the graveside at Harris Funeral Home.
