Julian Earle Griffin Jr.

Julian Earle Griffin, Jr., son of the late Beverly Cole Griffin and Julian Earle Griffin, died on Tuesday, October 28, 2014, in Greenwood, SC, at the age of 79. He was born in Florence, SC, on August 6, 1935. Mr. Griffin attended Wofford College and studied extensively in Europe. He subsequently taught at Middlebury College in Vermont and Lander University in Greenwood. He also assisted with the family business, Griffin's Jewelers of Greenwood. Mr. Griffin was an accomplished pianist and scholar, and spoke several languages. He traveled yearly to Europe and enjoyed many friends there, as well as in Greenwood. He was known for his brilliant mind, quick wit, and many charming eccentricities. He was preceded in death by his parents; his maternal aunt and uncle, Dr. and Mrs. Perry Douglas Hay of Florence; his uncle, Harry Cooper Wilson of Mayesville; and numerous cousins on both sides of his family. He is survived by his maternal aunt, Mrs. Billie Cole Wilson Copeland of Sumter, several cousins and several very close friends. Much appreciation and thanks is extended from his family to Father Marcus C Burch, Thurmond Bishop, and the Bishop family. Funeral services will be held Friday, October 31, at Saint John of the Ladder Orthodox Church in Piedmont, SC, at 11:00 am followed by burial at Saints Mary and Martha Monastery in Wagener, SC, at 4:00 pm. Memorials may be made to the Saint John of the Ladder Orthodox Church Building Fund, 701 Augusta Arbor Way, Piedmont, SC 29681. May his memory be eternal!
