Kathy Rauton Bernard, 60, of Abbeville, wife of Myron Bernard, Jr., passed away peacefully at her home on February 16, 2025, following a long battle with cancer. She was born in Columbia to James Rauton and the late Joann Baughman Rauton.
A graduate of Abbeville High School, Class of 1982, Kathy attended Lander University. She received her under-graduate degree from Minot State University and her master’s degree from Grand Canyon University. Kathy began her teaching career in special education in 1995 with the Abbeville County School District at Diamond Hill Elementary School and retired on June 30, 2024 as the Special Services Director and 4K Coordinator for the District. Throughout her career, she was a passionate advocate for her students, always striving to ensure they received the support and encouragement they needed. A highlight of her life was her involvement with the Special Olympics, where she inspired countless individuals to achieve their personal best. Kathy faced her illness with the same bravery she inspired in her students, showcasing her belief in the possibility of hope.
Outside of her education career, she was an active participant in the community. Kathy proudly contributed to Relay for Life, demonstrating her dedication to supporting those affected by cancer. She was also a member of the Abbeville Cotillion Club, where she enjoyed life through music and dancing. Kathy was a devoted member of Grace United Methodist Church where her faith guided her throughout her life.
In addition to her mother, Joann, she was preceded in death by her mother-in-law, Karen Bernard.
Kathy is survived by her husband of 26 years, Myron, of the home; daughter, Ayden Bernard; father, Jim Rauton; brother, Ken Rauton (Julie); father-in-law, Myron Bernard, Sr; and sister-in-law, Maggie Gross (Daryl).
The family will receive friends 1:00PM – 2:30PM, Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at Harris Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin a 3:00PM, Wednesday, in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Jason Wilson and Rev. Matt Turner officiating. A private burial will be held in Long Cane Cemetery.
