Kenneth L. Johnston, 81, of Abbeville, died on Wednesday, June 08, 2011 at Self Regional Health Care in Greenwood. He was born in Charlotte, NC to the late Otha M. & Carrie Wallace Johnston. Mr. Johnston served in the United States Army. He retired after 30 years of service with the City of Charlotte Fire Department as Commander for Station 17. He was a former member of the St. James United Methodist Church in Charlotte NC where he was a dedicated member of the Male Chorus. He and his wife of 47 years, the late Charles Tillman Johnston, settled in Abbeville to raise Charolais Cattle. He owned and operated the Sunny Acre Farm and was a faithful member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church. Mr. Johnston was also the owner of the Johnston Landscaping and Concrete which he started in Charlotte and continued in Abbeville. He was a member of the National Fire Fighter Association and the Hardee's "House of Knowledge Morning" Coffee Drinking Club. Surviving Mr. Johnston are his two daughters, Suzan Sherer and her husband Robert of Abbeville and Shelly Norman of Charlotte, NC; a sister, Janie Mae Alexander of Orlando, FL; three grandchildren, R. Michael Sherer, Jr., Stacey McCurry and Zachary Norman; two great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Josh Sherer; and a special friend, Peggy New of Abbeville. The family will receive friends from 2:00PM to 3:30PM on Friday, June 10, 2011 at Harris Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 4:00PM on Friday in the funeral home chapel. Burial, along with a funeral service, will be Sunday, June 12, 2011 at 4:00PM at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Charlotte, NC. The family is at the residence.
