Linda Wigington Gettys

Linda W. Gettys, 90, of Due West, SC, passed away July 4, 2014 at her residence, following a brief illness. Born Nov. 20, 1923 in Anderson, SC, she was the daughter of the late Zora Merritt and Wade Hampton Wigington. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Hogue Gettys, Sr.; two brothers, Louie Merritt Wigington and Wade Hampton Wigington, Jr. Mrs. Gettys is survived by two sons, Robert H. Gettys, Jr. of Due West and Thomas W. Gettys and his wife Vivian Richards Gettys of Baton Rouge, LA, four grandchildren, Dawn G. Brown, Paul Gettys, Robert H. Gettys and Sarah Elizabeth Gettys and five great-grandchildren. Mrs. Gettys was a graduate of Erskine College, received a Master's Degree plus 30 hours from Clemson University, a member and past president of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. She taught fourth grade and music at Donalds Elementary, was Principal at West Hodges Elementary and later, Principal of Woodfields Elementary in Greenwood, SC. She was a long time member of Due West ARP Church and enjoyed singing in the choir. Mr. and Mrs. Gettys had a beautiful yard of azaleas and boxwoods that had been rooted from cuttings. They were presented by Abbeville County Committee of the Governor's Beautification and Improvement Committee on multiple occasions. The family will receive friends on Sunday, July 6, 2014 from 2:00PM to 4:00PM at Harris Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 11:00AM, Monday, July, 7, 2014 in the Due West ARP Church with the Reverend Calvin Draffin presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
