Mattox P. 'Mac' McCalla Jr., 93, of Iva, husband of Evelyn Reaber McCalla, died Sunday, September 23, 2012 at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson. Mr. McCalla was born in Greenwood, SC to the late Mattox P. And Ella Nickles McCalla,Sr. He was a longtime member of Smyrna United Methodist Church and was also a charter member of the Mt. Carmel Yacht Club. Mr. McCalla was a WWII veteran having served in the U.S. Army. In 1959 Mac went to work for Karastan Bigelow and logged more than 3.5 million miles as a truck driver. At age 75, in 1994 he retired not because he had to but because they moved his job out of state. Mac loved his job and was once quoted as saying 'I want to keep working. I like my work. My work is my hobby. There's never a dull moment.'A? In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim McCalla and John W. McCalla, Sr. Surviving Mr. McCalla is his wife of 47 years of the home; a daughter, Nancy Sanders and her husband Jeff of Elberton, GA; two sons, Mac 'Little Mac' McCalla, III and his wife Suzanne of Lake Secession and Ike McCalla of Anderson; two sisters, Ann M. Anderson of Indianapolis, IN and Elvira M. Powers of Savannah, GA; a sister-in-law, Jean K. McCalla, of Iva; five grandchildren, one great-granddaughter, and several nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends from 2:00PM to 3:00PM Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at Smyrna United Methodist Church in Lowndesville. A Celebration of Mac's life will begin at 3:30PM in the church with the Rev. Donnie Murdock officiating. The family is at the home.
