Martha Bowie 'Mama Jack' Whaley, 94, of Abbeville, wife of the late Jack D. Whaley, died peacefully on Sunday, May 11, 2014 at her residence. She was born in Abbeville, SC to the late Calvin E. and Lucile Sharpe Bowie. Mrs. Whaley was 1941 graduate of Erskine College. She taught in the Abbeville County School System for 20 plus years. Mrs. Whaley was a longtime member of the First Baptist Church of Abbeville where she served as former church secretary, taught Sunday school, member of the Kathryn Worth Grant Circle, served on various committees and especially enjoyed working with the Women's Missionary Union (WMU). She was also a member of the former Daffodil Garden Club. Mrs. Whaley was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and really just 'Mama Jack' to everyone with whom she came in contact. In addition to her husband, which she was married to for 66 years, and her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Glenn, Newell, and Bobby Bowie. Surviving Mrs. Whaley are her three children, Jack D. 'Danny' Whaley, Jr. (Bonnie) of Due West, SC, Suzanne W. Sorrow (Spencer) and Lucile W. Culbreth (Mike) all of Abbeville; eleven grandchildren and thirty great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 10:00AM to 11:00AM at Harris Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 13, 2014. Funeral services will begin 11:30AM in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Wayne Wiggins, Rev. Dr. John Keith and Dr. Allan Kolb officiating. Burial will follow in Gilgal Cemetery.
