Mary Evelyn Ezell, 84, of Abbeville, died Thursday, September 19, 2024, at her home surrounded by her family. She was born in Ware Shoals, to the late Joseph Capers and Janet Bolt Ezell.
An alumna of Taylors High School, Mary graduated in 1958, where she distinguished herself as an All-Star basketball player. Her prestigious 47-year career in law enforcement, serving both the city and county of Abbeville, is a testament to her unwavering commitment to her community. As the first policewoman in Abbeville County, she broke barriers and paved the way for future generations of women in law enforcement. Not only did she serve her local community with distinction, but she was also honored to work as a security guard during the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia. Mary enjoyed spending time at the beach. She also cherished her family and loved time spent with them, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought her immense joy and pride. Her legacy lives on through the memories shared by those who were fortunate enough to know her. She was of the Catholic faith.
Mary is survived by her children, Janette Bridwell, George (Loretta) Rohlinger, Denise McCarthy, Roberta Williams and Joey ‘Waldo’ (Tiffany) Freese; eleven grandchildren, Chris McCarthy, Brittney (Jayla) Patterson, Heather (Jacob) Millmaker, Cassandra (Andy) McCarthy, Candace Williams, Chastity McCarthy, Brandon Parker, D.J. Freese, Olivia (C.J.) Lewis, Megan (Mudd) Summey and Jacob Rohlinger; seven great-grandchildren, Amber, Jacob, Tyler, Carson, Emma Miles and Jamie; brother, Eddie Ezell; and her beloved cat, Candy.
