Mary Coker Wieters

Mary Coker Wieters, 82, of Abbeville, wife of the late Wade Wieters, passed away Saturday, September 28, 2024, at Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood. She was born in Suffolk, VA to the late William C. and Louise Williams Coker.

A 1963 graduate of Converse College, Mary was employed for over 25 years as an associate at Waldenbooks where she touched many with her incredible ability to recommend the perfect book. While a best seller could be written about Mary, we are fortunate to have her story written in our hearts. Mary’s vibrant personality made her a beloved member of her community and she found true joy in spending time with her friends on Church Street.

Mary was a passionate advocate for animals and gardening was one of her treasured pastimes. A devoted bridge player, she also took great pleasure in attending plays at the Peace Center in Greenville with her Abbeville Ladies group. Family remained at the heart of Mary’s life and nothing brought her more happiness than attending her grandchildren’s various events. She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) and Abbeville Presbyterian Church. Mary lived a life filled with warmth, kindness and an infectious spirit that touched the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Caleb Wieters and two brothers, Mac Coker and Fred Coker.

Mary is survived by her son, Chris Wieters (Arlene) and daughter, Nan Wieters all of Abbeville, SC; daughter-in-law, Claire Wieters McCoy (Ken) of Greenwood, SC; sister, Flora Coker of Milwaukee, WI; six grandchildren, Charlie Wieters, Katie Wieters, Sam Wieters, Will Wieters, Spencer Wieters and Bess Wieters; and friend, Will Nickles.

A celebration of Mary’s life will be held Saturday, November 23, 2024, from 4:00PM to 6:00PM at the Belmont Inn in Abbeville, SC.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial donations be sent to UCMAC, P.O. Box 502, Abbeville, SC 29620
