Nell Flynn Nickles

Nell Flynn Nickles, 100, of Abbeville, SC, wife of the late W. Franklin Nickles, Jr., died peacefully on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at the Hospice House in Greenwood. She was born in Abbeville County on December 31, 1910 to the late George Louis Flynn and Norma Fuller Flynn. Nell was a 1932 graduate of Winthrop College, after which she was employed by Riegel Textile Company. Some years later she joined the Abbeville County Health Department, where she remained until retiring. Following retirement, Nell volunteered in the Abbeville Opera House Box Office. She also served as the Secretary/Treasurer for the Long Cane Cemetery Association. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, The Literary Lantern Book Club and various other service organizations in Abbeville. Nell loved her family, and was especially close to her three grandsons, Will, Tom and Patrick. She was very charitable, generous and and always respectful of others, regardless of their station in life. Nell Flynn Nickles was a loved and respected lady in the Abbeville Community, and she will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by three sisters: Margaret F. Bowie, Georgia F. Gilleland and Norma Flynn. Surviving Nell are: her son, William F. "Teto" Nickles, III; three grandsons, William F. "Will" Nickles, IV, Thomas Watts Nickles and his wife Mary Ann and Patrick Knox Nickles; two great-grandchildren, Cameron and Thomas; two step great-grandchildren, Ashlann and Madde; and two special daughters-in-law, Jeane C. Nickles and Patti K. Nickles; niece, Margaret G. Thomas; three nephews, G. Flynn Bowie, William H. Gilleland, Jr. and Benjamin C. Gilleland. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. to 3:30 on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at Harris Funeral Home, with Graveside Services at 4:00 p.m. in the family plot at Long Cane Cemetery, with The Reverend Jason Wilson officiating. The family is at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Tom Nickles, Deer Run, Abbeville. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorials be made to Abbeville Residential Care Facility, 294 Hwy. 28 Bypass, Abbeville, SC 29620. The Nickles family would like to thank Ms. Joyce Simpson and her staff for the kind, respectful, loving care given Nell during her stay with them.
