Ray C. 'Big Pop' Spires, 87, of Abbeville, husband of the late Doris C. Spires, died peacefully at his home on Sunday, August 31, 2014. He was born in Lincolnton, GA to the late Harry and Ellaree Little Spires, Sr. Mr. Spires served in the U.S. Army and was a member of Smyrna United Methodist Church. He worked at Flexible Technologies for many years, built bridges and was the founder of Spires Logging and Trucking. He was a 50 year Mason, member of Dew Drop Masonic Lodge, and a Hejaz and Hillbilly Shriner. Mr. Spires loved to farm and spend time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Frances Spires Burriss and Catherine Spires Nelson. Surviving 'Big Pop' are his two sons, Robert Spires and Danny Ray Spires and his wife Vicki all of Abbeville; two brothers, Junior Spires of Lowndesville and J. Hughe Spires of Abbeville; two sisters, Mildred Maxine Spires Ralph of Anderson and Marjoree Spires Powell of Lowndesville; a sister-in-law, Sara 'Issie' Crittendon of Abbeville; two grandchildren, Shane Spires and his wife Amy and Crystal Spires Wiley and her husband Darris; four great-grandchildren, Shaney Spires, Clary Spires, Danni Spires and Mallory Wiley; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends. The family will receive friends from 2:00PM to 3:00PM Wednesday, September 3, 2014 at Smyrna United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be 3:30PM Wednesday, September 3, 2014 in the church with the Rev. Daniel Wood and Rev. Scotty Willoughby officiating. Burial will follow in the Spires Family Cemetery.
