Raymond Lee Huston, 72, of Lowndesville, husband of Shirley Rowe Huston, died Sunday, May 2, 2021, at the Rainey Hospice House in Anderson.
Born in Medford, OR in 1948, he served in the United States Navy for six years active duty aboard the USS Bainbridge in Vietnam, earning the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Stars. Ray was so pleased when 40 years later, the United States people began recognizing and appreciating Vietnam Veterans.
He worked for decades in the nuclear industry, hazardous clean up, then in government construction. During his attempts at retirement, Ray worked general construction for several amazing men, all of whom he admired.
Throughout the years, he served his communities with constant physical contributions, building wheelchair ramps, repairing homes, replacing roofs, providing and delivering Christmas gifts, cleaning up yards, and most recently being co-director of a local food pantry, all while remaining steadily in the background and never expecting acknowledgement. It gave him great joy to be asked to help someone. Ray faithfully supported and assisted his wife with many projects and endeavors, always helpful. He was a member of Iva First Baptist Church.
Ray is survived by his wife of 40 years, Shirley Huston; son, Matthew (Jennifer) Shockley, granddaughters, Shelby and Sophie; sister, Georgia Ann Chapin; numerous in-laws and a multitude of nieces and nephews. He thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated his adopted Rowe family.
A celebration of Ray’s life will be 11:00AM, Saturday, May 8, 2021, in the Harris Funeral Home – Abbeville Chapel with Rev. Scotty Willoughby officiating.
