The Reverend Gregory Chesnut Slater, 71, husband of Lucille Carlisle Slater, died on October 27, 2022, following several months of illness. He was born in Chicago to the late William Leonard Slater and Betty Gregory Slater Ware. After his father's death, Greg and his mother, and stepfather, the late Richard Curtis Ware, resided in Doraville, Georgia, where he graduated from Sequoyah High School in 1969. He earned his A.B. degree from Erskine College in 1973 and the M.Div. degree from Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, in 1976. Following seminary, Greg was ordained to the gospel ministry in the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church.
.
One of Greg's greatest joys was in preaching and teaching the word of God. He considered his calling a great privilege. Greg pastored ARP churches in Concord, NC, Winter Springs, FL, Little Rock, AR, Winnsboro, SC, and Cayce, SC. He served as interim pastor at the Rowan ARP Church in Lugoff, SC. Greg served the denomination in many different capacities as well, having been elected Moderator for Mississippi Valley Presbytery and later for Catawba Presbytery, as well as serving as Vice-Moderator of Synod. He contributed his time to many boards of the denomination including Christian Education and Erskine College and Seminary. Greg was always active in the communities where he lived, supporting social services/crisis intervention ministries, Bible Teaching Associations, Ministerial groups, and volunteering as a hospital chaplain.
While a student at Erskine, Greg met his wife, Lucille, and they were married in 1973. They have two children, a son, William Carlisle Slater, of Columbia and a daughter, Carol Jean, and son-in-law, Brandon Rogers, of Camden, SC. Greg enjoyed being "Papa" to his three grandchildren, Austin, Adrianna, and Makayla. The family has special memories of many visits to Bonclarken in Flat Rock, NC, and vacation trips to Myrtle Beach, SC. Greg is also survived by his brother-in-law, Todd Carlisle, and his wife, Margaret, and by his sister-in-law, Catherine, and her husband, Steve Hardy.
