Rosemary Chandler Bowie, 66, of Chapin, SC, wife of the late James W. ‘Jim’ Bowie, died Monday, October 24, 2022 at the Lexington Hospice House. She was born in Abbeville, SC to the late William B. ‘Bill’ Chandler and Hilda Jordan Chandler.
A graduate of Abbeville High School, Rosemary received a BA in Speech Correction from Columbia College and her MA in Speech Pathology from the University of Tennessee. A licensed Speech Pathologist, she began her career at St. Nicholas Speech and Hearing Clinic in Greenwood, SC. Rosemary continued her career in Home Health for DHEC. She then opened a private practice with an emphasis in adult swallowing therapy.
Rosemary was employed as a Speech Pathologist at H.E. Corley Elementary School working with the Child Find program to identify preschool speech and language deficits. As the head Speech Pathologist supervisor in summer programs for the Extended School Year, she was selected as Teacher of the Year by her peers at H.E. Corley Elementary. Rosemary participated in all school events involving the parents, teachers, staff and community. She was known as the hospitality hostess for all events at Corley.
A presenter in outreach programs for different educational organizations to promote the identification of children with speech disorders, Rosemary was a mentor and Clinical Supervisor for Student Clinicians from Columbia College and the University of South Carolina.
For the last years before retirement, she collaborated with teachers of the kindergarten and first grade to identify and enhance language skills of their students as a language consultant.
A member of the American Speech and Hearing Association, South Carolina Speech and Hearing Association and Chapin Presbyterian Church, Rosemary was a mentor, teacher and friend to all and touched many lives with kindness and grace.
Rosemary is survived by her daughter, Sara Chandler Bowie (Chase Asmer) of West Columbia, SC; her college roommate and best friend, Jane Brockington Harrell of Sumter, SC; along with many extended family and friends.
Funeral services will be 11:00AM, Saturday, October 29, 2022, in Chapin Presbyterian Church, 600 Old Lexington Highway, Chapin, SC 29036-7978 with Rev. Scott Dinkins officiating. Graveside services will be 3:00PM, Saturday, in Lebanon Presbyterian Church Cemetery, 698 Mt. Carmel Road, Abbeville, SC 29620.
