Sammy Sutherland

Samuel ‘Sammy’ T. Sutherland, Jr., 82, of Abbeville, husband of Dianne Wilson Sutherland died Monday, October 9, 2023 at his home. He was born in Abbeville to the late Samuel ‘Tom’ Sutherland, Sr. and Dorothy Ware Sutherland.

Sammy was a 1959 graduate of Abbeville High School and member of Grace United Methodist Church. For many years, he was employed with Winn-Dixie Grocery Store, Bolen Furniture Store, and retired from CSX Railroad after 34 dedicated years. Sammy enjoyed tending to his yard, spending time with family, and cheering on the Clemson Tigers.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Claude Sutherland, and a brother-in-law, Arvin Gambrell.

Sammy is survived by his wife, Dianne of 62 years of the home; a son, Kevin Sutherland (Sonja) of Due West; two daughters, Lisa Ricketts (Darrell) of Aynor, SC and Terri Collins of Wilmington, NC, (Tim) of Abbeville; a brother, Jimmy Sutherland (Lee), of Abbeville; three sisters, Betty S. Uldrick (Frank) of Abbeville, Edna S. Faggart (Bob) of Abbeville, and Gail Gambrell of Donalds; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and another great-grandchild on the way.

The family will receive friends from 10:00AM to 11:00 AM on Thursday, October 12, 2023 at Harris Funeral Home. Funeral services will begin on Thursday at 11:30AM in the funeral home chapel with Rev. Darrell Ricketts officiating. Private burial will follow in Melrose Cemetery.
