Samuel R. Slay

Samuel R. Slay, Staff Sergeant, U.S.A (Ret), 76, of Abbeville, husband of June Flynn Slay, died Wednesday, September 26, 2007 at the Hospice House in Greenwood. He was born in Abbeville to the late Albert and Sallie Mae Turman Slay. Mr. Slay served in the 2nd Ranger Co. 187 Airborne in the Korean War from 1951-1952 and the F Troop, 4th Air Cav. in Vietnam from 1971-1972, and then also served a second tour in Vietnam. After retirement from the Army he worked at Flexible Technologies where he then finally retired. Mr. Slay enjoyed spending time with his granddaughter and his family. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister; Earlene Richey. Surviving Mr. Slay is his wife of 53 years of the home; a daughter, Cathi Gordon and her husband Robert of Abbeville; a granddaughter, Kaitlyn Gordon of Abbeville; five brothers, James Slay of Saluda, Allan Slay of Abbeville, Billy Slay of Greenwood, Johnny Slay of Greenwood, and Tommy Slay of Abbeville; two sisters, Helen Smith, and Viola Smith both of Abbeville. The family will receive friends from 2:00PM to 3:30PM on Saturday, September 29, 2007 at Harris Funeral Home. Graveside services with full military honors will be at 4:00PM Saturday in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be sent in memory of Mr. Slay to the HospiceCare of the Piedmont 408 W. Alexander Ave. Greenwood, SC 29646. The family is at his residence.
