Sarah B. Hershberger

Sarah B. Hershberger, 94, of Due West, SC, died May 7, 2010, peacefully at her home. She was born in Nappanee, Indiana, April 19, 1916, to Levi N. Bontrager and Martha (Hochstetler) Bontrager. When she was eleven years old, she moved with her family to Virginia Beach, Virginia. On January 18, 1942, she married Elmer J. Hershberger, son of Joseph I. and Mary Ann (Miller) Hershberger. In 1962 they moved with their six children to Amelia, Virginia, and lived there until 1970 when they moved to Due West, SC. She was a member of Cold Spring Mennonite Church and often expressed gratefulness for her church family and the ministers there. She enjoyed sewing with the sewing circle and made a number of quilts for family and friends. She was a life-long gardener of vegetables and flowers. Her husband, Elmer, preceded her in death in 2006. She is survived by six children a?" Merlin (Pam) Hershberger of Sarasota, FL, Daniel (Marilyn) Hershberger of Due West, SC, Martha (Clair) Steiner of Hendersonville, NC, Mary (David) Kraybill of Columbus, OH, Jim (Ann) Hershberger of Harrisonburg, VA, and Duane (Ruth) Hershberger of Boyertown, PA a?" twenty-three grandchildren, thirty-six great-grandchildren, one sister, Polly Miller of Greenwood, Delaware, and two brothers, Eli Bontrager of Milford, Delaware, and Amos Bontrager of Quarryville, Pennsylvania. Two sisters, Sylvia Miller and Anna Bontrager, and an infant brother Louis, preceded her in death. The family would like to thank her many friends and especially the members of Cold Spring Mennonite Church for the visits, meals and many other acts of kindness in her last years. Funeral services will be conducted at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 9, at Cold Spring Mennonite Church, 226 Cold Spring Church Rd., Abbeville, SC. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials to Sarah B. Hershberger may be sent to Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Ave., Greenwood, SC, 29646.
