Sarah 'Sally' Hanvey Martin

Dr. Sarah ‘Sally’ Hanvey Martin, 66, of Troy, SC, wife of Michael A. Martin, passed away Sunday, November 10, 2024, at her home after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. She was born May 16, 1958 in Greenwood, SC to the late William ‘Bill’ Harold Hanvey, Sr. and Clara Rice Hanvey. Sally was reared in McCormick, SC

She received her Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education and her Master’s of Arts in Education (both in English Education) from the University of Georgia. In addition, she received her Doctorate of Philosophy from Louisiana State University. Sally taught high school English in Georgia for four years. She additionally taught at the university level for thirty years, retiring from Eastern Kentucky University in January, 2017 having been awarded Professor Emeritus status.

Sally was dearly loved and will be deeply missed by her husband, Michael A. Martin, and her two children, James H. Martin (Kourtney) and Sarah R. Reetz (Joey) and her two granddaughters, Eloise and Lily Martin. Additionally, she is survived by her sisters, Rebecca ‘Becky’ Giebeig (Sparks), Jo Claire Hickson (Harry), Lee Self and her brother, William Harold (Hal) Hanvey, Jr. (Jean), her brother-in-law, Charles Martin (Kathleen) and her sister-in-law, Mary Martin.

A memorial service for Sarah ‘Sally’ Hanvey Martin will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2024 at the Harris Funeral Home in Abbeville, SC at 3:00PM with Reverend Jason Wilson officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service.
