Sophie K. Whiten

Sophie K. Whiten, 83, of Abbeville, died Tuesday, December 3, 2024, at the home of her daughter, surrounded by her family. She was born in Crete, Greece to the late Nicolas Kalfayannai and Marie Belabekis Kalfayannai.

Sophie graduated from high school in her hometown of Crete, Greece, later moving to the United States. Her journey to becoming a proud United States citizen was realized on September 17, 1975 and was one of her most cherished accomplishments. Sophie retired from the textile industry having worked at the Jockey and Bloomsburg plants. She found joy in the simple pleasures of life, cherishing time spent outdoors, particularly tending to her flower garden. The beach also held a special place in her heart, offering her a time of rest and relaxation. 

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her grandson, Ethan Chase McCord; sister, Georgia Tsapakis; and brother, Stratos Kalfayannai.

Sophie is survived by her children, Virginia W. McCord (James) and George Whiten, III (Anita) all of Abbeville; sister, Panagiota Smith (Paul) of Easley; two grandchildren, Will Whiten and Bradley McCord (Brigitte); two great-grandchildren, Bradley and Caydence; niece, Sophia (Frank) and nephew, Minoli; and her loving fur baby, Willow.

A private family service will be held at a later date.
