Rev. Virgil L. Manning, 80, of Abbeville, SC, husband of Dorothy Kidd Manning, died peacefully on Friday, May 8, 2015 at his residence. He was born in Calhoun Falls, SC to the late Henry N. and Clora Beauford Manning. Rev. Manning proudly served in the U.S. Army and retired from the S.C. National Guard with 26 years of total service. He was a 1959 graduate of Holmes Theological Seminary and received his B.A. degree in Sociology from Central Wesleyan College. Rev. Manning was a devoted husband, father and a pastor serving several churches for over 50 years. During this time he also helped build churches in various areas. After retiring as a pastor, he served as Bailiff for the Abbeville County Sheriff's Department for 15 years. He served as the Missions Director for the Upper S.C. Pentecostal Holiness Conference for 8 years. Rev. Manning was a member of the South Greenwood Pentecostal Holiness Church and the Upper S.C. Pentecostal Holiness Conference. He was a longtime member of the Men's Ministry at the Calhoun Falls Pentecostal Holiness Church. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry Manning, Jr and Stacey Manning; two sisters, Ann Elrod and Marguerite Bannister; a son-in-law, Joseph Meek and a grandson, Joshua Rolin. Rev. Manning is survived by his wife of 60 years, Dorothy 'Dot' Manning of the home; two daughters, Charlene Meek of Piedmont, SC and Deedee Johnson and her husband Marion of Abbeville, SC; three grandchildren, Matthew Rolin, Brandon Johnson (Lacy) and Nathan Johnson (Lauren); three great-grandchildren, his little lights, Catalin, Chelsea and Shaney. The family will receive friends from 6:00PM to 8:00PM Sunday, May 10, 2015 at Harris Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 2:00PM Monday, May 11, 2015 in the South Greenwood Pentecostal Holiness Church, 17 First Street, Greenwood, SC with the Rev. Dr. W. Terry Bailey, Bishop Ray Boggs and Rev. Oreen Simpson officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens, 2699 Hwy 72 W Abbeville. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Rev. Manning may be sent to the Hospice Care of the Piedmont, 408 W. Alexander Ave., Greenwood, SC 29646. The family is at the residence.
